Workshop: Human Trafficking

All Michigan Health Professionals are now required to take Human Trafficking training.

Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulation (LARA)

“When do I have to meet the requirements for the completion of

training in identifying victims of human trafficking?”

 

Rule 338.3901a requires licensees to complete training in identifying

victims of human trafficking. This training requirement will

need to be completed prior to license renewal in 2021.

The Presenter, Dr. Jeremy S. Norwood, is currently an Associate Professor of Sociology, Global Studies, and Criminal Justice at Spring Arbor University in Spring Arbor, Michigan. His research focuses on three major areas of human trafficking: migrant farmworker populations in Western Michigan, massage parlors in South-Central Michigan, and on Backpage, plus other adult advertisement sections which advertise all over Michigan. Dr. Norwood has also served as a part of task forces in Calhoun, Jackson, and Lenawee Counties and has given numerous talks to church gatherings, housing inspectors, nursing professionals, political groups, public health organizations, social service agencies, among many others. He and his students have held three different annual conferences on human trafficking during the Fall Semester at Spring Arbor University which have educated more than 500 attendees.

(3) Types and Venues of Human Trafficking in Michigan or the United States

(4) Causes and Indicators of Human Trafficking (particularly in Health Care field)

(5) Potential Warning Signs for Human Trafficking

(6) Resources/Responses to Potential Cases of Human Trafficking

 

What Training is About: In this workshop, Dr. Jeremy Norwood will provide professionals in the counseling, health care, and social work fields substantive training regarding the issue of human trafficking and how it relates to their areas of practice. In response to the rise in the number of cases of human trafficking which have been reported around the State of Michigan, the Michigan legislature has required all counseling professionals to receive training on the topic of human trafficking. Specific areas to be covered include the scope and magnitude of human trafficking, how human trafficking is defined, the types and venues of human trafficking in Michigan, the causes and indicators of human trafficking, potential warning signs for human trafficking, and resources to report potential cases of human trafficking.
